December District Meeting

Had a combined District and Commissioners meeting tonight.  Had plenty of Christmas desserts, where my wife’s cookies were quite the hit 🙂

FullSizeRenderTalked about boosting membership and how BeAScout.org is one of of the ways we do that through people that are referred to us from National.  The site needs some work,  but until the bigger issues are resolved at the National level, James will make sure at least our District portion of it directs prospective Scouts better to our local units.  We also talked about looking at how all of our local school districts handle flyers and how we might be able to get them into the schools better.  Bottom line is we need more Scouts!

tiger_cub_ovalIn terms of Journey to Excellence, we are on track for Bronze by year end.

Talked about the Cub Scout Day Camp and how this year we would like to balance the numbers this year with the Twilight Camp.

The District Camporee is scheduled for March 27-29th again at South Meadow at the Mar-Tar-Awa Campground at Viejas Reservation.  The theme these year is “Survivor”.Boyscout SurvivorWood Badge sign-ups are underway.  We had a great talk about what people got out of Wood Badge and was thought to be worthwhile and even life-changing!  It is set for April 30 – May 2nd and May 14th – 16th. Click here for more info!

Also, our District Commissioner, Bill Kellner, needs more Commissioners.  If you can help, please contact him by clicking here to email. And better yet, you get this neat patch!

AsstntDistCommisFriends of Scouting is making headway and people have been getting calls to remind them to get their pledges in by year-end.  We are also getting ready for the new year and I am pleased to say the Key 3 have already made their commitments!

Finally, if you are looking for a live Christmas Tree, please consider Troop 363, who has a Tree lot at the Elks Lodge in El Cajon.

Mark Robak here and I had my first meeting last night as the new Heartland District Chair.

You can see a District map with the units here.

I was really impressed with the level of dedication of the volunteers and how many were also involved in the leadership of our council, San Diego-Imperial Council.

Talked about membership and how to get especially more Tiger Scouts, which we are down in numbers year over year.  Discussed how we might go about getting more flyers into the local elementary schools.

In terms of programs, we talked about the upcoming District Camporee and some other possible ideas for locations for it.  Also, that a number of our District leaders would be involved in running the upcoming Wood Badge training at Mataguay Scout Ranch for 2015.

Our District Executive, James Lennon talked about the results of the popcorn sales.  The sales did well and we should have the final numbers shortly once the on-line sales are accounted for.

We also kicked off the Friends of Scouting for next year.  James handed out pledge cards and mentioned we always start with the leadership.

Eric Westphall, who is the District Chair for the Scout Fair Coupon Books discussed ways of getting more East County businesses in the book for next year.

I will be heading up a District effort to have Heartland Scouts march in the Mother Goose Parade on November 23rd.  If you want to be there plan on a window from roughly 8am to 12pm.  You can email me with any questions.

The next District Committee meeting is December 4th at 7pm at Cafe 67.
